THCP: How the super cannabinoid is made

There are always groundbreaking discoveries in the world of cannabis. One of the newest and most intriguing is that of the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabiphorol, also known as THCP.

What exactly is THCP?

THCP stands for Tetrahydrocannabiphorol . It is a phytocannabinoid that is one of the many active substances found in cannabis. Researchers have identified approximately 133 such molecules to date, with THCP representing one of the most recent discoveries. It is often referred to as the “Super-THC” because it is potentially over 30 times more potent than conventional delta-9-THC from cannabis. Known for its mind-altering effects, THC has significant effects on our brains and bodies. But THCP could overshadow that.

Discovery and effects of THCP

Cinzia Citti and her research team discovered this remarkable cannabinoid in the Italian cannabis strain FM2 in 2019. The effects of THCP and THC arise through the activation of CB1 endocannabinoid receptors. Interestingly, THCP binds to these receptors approximately 33 times more strongly than THC, which explains its impressive effect .

The endocannabinoid system and THCP

The endocannabinoid system plays a key role in the interaction with cannabinoids such as THCP. It consists of receptors distributed throughout the body. The mind-altering effects of THC and THCP arise from the activation of these CB1 endocannabinoid receptors. This brings THCP into the focus of scientific research examining its effect on the endocannabinoid system and its potential therapeutic benefits.

Production and isolation of THCP

Due to its low concentration in plants, THCP has previously been difficult to detect. The main supplier of this rare cannabinoid is currently the FM2 strain. To produce THCP for commercial products, hemp with a delta-9 THC content of less than 0.3% is often used, with CBD serving as the base. A specific chromatographic process and the use of n-hexane instead of ethanol make it possible to extract THCP in higher concentrations.

Conclusion

In summary, THCP is an impressive cannabinoid with potentially stronger effects than THC. It could significantly influence cannabis research and application in the future. However, further research is needed to understand its exact effects and full potential. We eagerly await more information about THCP in the near future.
